So it begins. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), a four day synaptic overload, overrunning the Los Angeles Convention Center each year since it was in Atlanta in 1998, runs from Tuesday May 17th through Friday May 20th. Over five thousand (5,000) products are going to be shown at E3 this year, with approximately 1,000 never-before seen products. Combine thousands of products with the big three's unveiling of the next generation of consoles, which looks absolutely amazing, and consider the fact that this year's expo sold out of 540,000 square feet of floor space in record time, and there's no doubt that E3 2005 promises to be one of the biggest E3's in history.
For the first time, Seriously! will be providing live E3 coverage, directly from the show floor and conferences. Obviously we won't be able to cover all 5,000 products at E3, but we do intend to provide you with an inside look at what it is like to attend the Expo. What is no doubt at the top of our list is Serious Sam II, which will make its first public appearance in the form of a playable demo for both PC and XBox at 2K Games' booth. We have a scheduled play time as soon as the show floor opens at 10 AM (PDT) on Wednesday, and will post videos and screenshots immediately afterwards. Unfortunately we will be unable to interview any members of Croteam at the Expo, as they were unable to attend at the last minute due to crunch time for Serious Sam II. We couldn't possibly spend the entire time drooling over Serious Sam II, or even plotting to swipe a copy, so it looks like I'm going to be forced to look into many of the other products at the expo as well. Oh well, such is life.
Some notable products that we will likely be covering, aside from the assorted montage of game upon game, include AGEIA's new PhysX chip. The PhysX chip is a dedicated hardware solution for Physics calculations in games, similar to how there are currently dedicated hardware accelerators for 3D graphics. They will be showcasing around a dozen games utilizing their new technology, many of which are scheduled for a Christmas 2005 release. However, they were unable to specify which games would be demonstrated, so check back for our coverage of that on Thursday. Also, we will be reporting on the Media Briefing on the state of the industry, set to take place Wednesday morning, and presented by the ESA President, as well as reporting on various products from Saitek and other vendors.
Of course, no coverage of E3 2005 would be complete without the hottest games, and that means the hottest consoles. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have all revealed their next generation consoles, now it's time to see everything that will be demonstrated for these consoles on the show floor starting on Wednesday. We hope to provide a plethora of pictures, video, and information from the show floor and behind closed doors so that you may truly experience E3 for yourself.
