E3 Impressions - Ghost Recon 3

More and more games are being developed with a focus on modern combat and combat in the near future.

Unfortunately, I was distracted for the first few minutes by the fact that my video camera's battery was dying and I'd used up the current DV tape, so we don't have an entire video of this. However, the game looks very impressive, and may serve as the better half of a Battlefield 2 + Ghost Recon 3 modern warfare combo.

Ghost Recon 3 is set in worldwide situations about ten years from now. As with the prior Ghost Recon games, you have a squad of men at your controls, and some serious firepower. As I watched the squad work together as a team, providing covering fire while the other squad members advanced, ducking behind cover before popping out to squeeze a few shots and then taking cover again, I could only think about how much fun this game is going to be to play.

One of the coolest parts of the demonstration, and the badass muscle-man army guy seemed to agree, was when your squad encounters an enemy tank. Your infantrymen are no match for an armored tank on their own, but one member of your squad calls in an airstrike. A short while later a small window pops up on the left side of your HUD with a video feed of the apache's view of the tank itself, and as you peek out around the corner of the wall you're behind you see the tank get bigger and bigger, until at last it explodes right in front of you. Truly amazing.

Amidst all the action, the graphics are top-notch, as seems to be the trend with essentially every game currently in development. The uniforms of your squad are highly detailed, the men are lifelike and well-animated, and the ability to see yourself as you hold behind a wall taking cover, aside from a few seconds of popping out and unloading, is beautifully done. Ghost Recon 3 looks to be an excellent squad-based modern warfare campaign in single player, and will hopefully deliver the same action through multiplayer as well.
