Seriously! Croteam Interview
by Louva-Deus
Posted on September 27, 2005

Seriously! - In a recent interview it was mentioned that there are already several mods in development. Could you give us a few details on those?

Admir - We will reveal more info once all details are penned and agreed upon.

Seriously! - So far we have mentioned mods and patches but not everyone searches the internet to find such things. The question here is, did an Auto-Download feature make it into the game? To what extent will this feature be used and how will it work? And will this work for the XBOX version as well?

Admir - No, this feature isn't part of Xbox version but might end in up in the PC version. You will have to wait and see.

Seriously! - Regarding enemies, why witches and clowns of all things? Some people have been a bit distressed over the apparent lack of "seriousness" in some of the new enemies, even for this series. Do you have any comments about that?

Admir - People come up with conclusion based on images or old videos. Serious Sam is all about having fun and enjoying while playing. Creatures in previous Sam games have what we call “character”, which either made you laugh or cry upon introduction. It’s the same in SS2, we wanted to create creatures with personality and recognizable visual appearance. Believe me, once you engage in fights with the Witch for example, she won't be that funny. On the other hand, there are a lot of monsters in the game that have a wow effect when you encounter them. The game is mix of Croatian silliness and more serious ingredients.

Seriously! - With all the crazy humor in the game we would like to know where you get it from. Can you enlighten us? Is it "something in the water" as Fernando Melo suggested in his E3 interview with GameSpot?

Admir - It’s just us being open minded and crazy Croats as they call us. If something works in the game its in, there are no boundaries, if creatures, funny things in levels or weird music makes game more fun than they are in!

Seriously! - Can you give us some highlights of the good and bad times during the making of this game?

Admir - Good times are when you have normal working hours, plenty of drinks and food, bad times are all the rest :)

Seriously! - We heard that Croteam nearly split up from the stress after the release of the last two games and took a break for a year. How are you guys holding up this time around?

Admir - Actually that’s an evil rumor planted by our jealous competitors! Seriously, that was a bad translation of Dean's interview to German press. He said we took a break to design the new engine and the game, not that we broke apart. After finishing Serious Sam: Second Encounter, we did Serious Sam Xbox while our programmers were working on the design for the uber engine called Serious Engine 2.0. At the end of 2002, after the Xbox version of Serious Sam was finished we all concentrated on Serious Sam 2. So all is peachy in Crollywood :)

Seriously! - Croteam started out as five people working "in the garage" as the saying goes, how many people are there now that they have joined ranks with the developers behind Serious Sam? And just how many Croatians does it take to put the top franchises to shame?

Admir - Actually, 6 people. Now, we have 28 talented people working on Sam 2 and future projects in our secret underground headquarters in Hawaii, Serious Long road 5b to be exact!

It takes only 1 Croat to compare our game with Quake 3 to be beaten up with wet smelly socks by our security forces.

Seriously! - You guys are currently applying for the world record of having the most enemies on-screen but what about the competition? Will Serious Sam II beat out the likes of Starship Troopers for the title?

Admir - Its all about how you handle amount of enemies on screen. Having sh*tloads of them won't always guarantee best playability. The amount of enemies on screen we are aiming for is usable amount not absolute.

Seriously! - Now that the game is pretty much finished what will everyone be doing? It was said that the company will focus on supporting and promoting the new engine, but what about new content for the game like addons/expansions/bonus packs?

Admir - Team is already working on preproduction for future long-term and short-term projects like the patch and the technology and game demos. New content will appear probably with the DM patch and Serious Editor.

Seriously! - We have an ultimate insider information question: who is the best Serious Sam II player in Croteam? Also would it be possible, one of these days, for the community to have a game with you guys?

Admir - We all pretty much kick ass in SS2. :)

About the game, why not, we can play for cases of Beer?

Seriously! - Do you have any last comments on the game or about the company?

Admir - Serious Sam 2 rules in terms of playability, new features and our new engine. We are really proud of what we have done on this game. Whether you play it on Xbox or PC we know people will have fun and a good time (especially in co-op). Croteam is getting stronger with each title and new technology. Soon we will rule the world of gaming, so you better join before its to late. Also, the guys at 2K Games were really good on this project, we had good marketing and support from their side, cause they knew what a smash hit they have in their hands. Lastly, I would like to thank our community for patience and support we have had all these years. They make us work harder and more.

Stay serious.
