Prey was on display at 2K Games’ booth, and was setup with multiplayer for a tournament they had running all day. The tournaments that are frequently run at E3 are one of the things that really irritate me, as I absolutely love game tournaments, but it’s impossible for me to take the time out to participate in one. I played two rounds, and after decimating the opposition and winning a nice gaming mousepad, I headed out. In those two multiplayer matches, however, I really enjoyed myself and the gameplay that resulted from the use of multiple-gravity and portals.
For those of you unfamiliar with Prey, it’s a first person shooter with both a single player and multiplayer mode. The environments often feature multiple gravities, so you might see someone running along the ceiling above you while you’re running on the floor. It works really similar to Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. Also, there are various portals scattered across the levels that allow you to not only see other areas of the level, but to shoot through the portal as well as step through the portal yourself. All of the portals I encountered worked in each direction, and I actually had several firefights with myself and the enemy on opposite ends of a portal, shooting through the portal.
The action of the game was great, and if you enjoy multiplayer first person shooters, you’re going to love Prey. Also, while many of the shooters at E3 feature your typical variety of recent-era machine guns, rocket launchers, and pistols, the weapons in Prey that I encountered were rather interesting. There was a slime gun, somewhat similar to that found in Unreal Tournament, as well as another gun which had both a rapid-fire mode as well as a much slower but more powerful mode which was similar to a railgun with a scope.
The multiplayer deathmatch in Prey that I was able to play was a blast, and Prey should be at the top of the list for any PC shooter fans.
