Madden NFL '07
By Jason Rodzik
After winding through the rest of Nintendo’s Wii booth setup, I decided I’d pick out a game with a bit of a shorter wait than the rest, as well as a game that I was familiar with, so I tried out Madden ’07. I had plenty of time to familiarize myself with the specialized controls for Nintendo’s Wii controller by watching those who went ahead of me, and having played the game before, I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of what I was going to have to do.
The demo walked me through the controls for passing and kicking. Passing was interesting, as you actually have to make the passing motion with the main Wii controller. However, while other implementations of Madden require you to press the button of the receiver which you want to throw the ball to, the Wii still requires you to press the button for your desired receiver, but then also requires you to make the throwing motion in addition to this. I would have been much more impressed were you able to simply throw the ball in the direction of the desired receiver, with the Wii able to determine which direction you threw the ball. Also, kicking the ball straight required you to keep the controller perfectly level as you yanked it upwards quickly, and although this was accurate fewer times than the traditional setup, it’s awesome to finally see an implementation of football kicking that isn’t always as easy as pressing a button at the right time.
